Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy involves the use of an injection of the patient’s own concentrated blood platelets. These concentrated blood platelets, when injected into the injured area, have been found to be very effective at healing injuries and eliminating pain.

PRP therapy allows us to offer our patients an additional conservative treatment option for their pain. It is performed safely at the California Spine and Pain Institute office in West Hills, California and relieves pain without having to use general anesthesia, having to stay at a hospital, needing to get stitches, going through a long recovery process, or undergoing the risks of surgery.

The acronym PRP has most recently been featured in the news with the rising popularity of the treatment among professional athletes, recreational athletes, and highly functional individuals. Many have attributed PRP injections, particularly for athletic injuries, with enabling them to return back to regular activities and competition with minimal to no pain at all. This rapidly emerging technique shows very promising potential for many conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, and ligament sprains and tears.

PRP therapy presents patients with a long lasting, permanent solution through the body’s natural healing process. PRP is not something that wears off over time as with a traditional pain injection.

What is PRP?

Platelet rich plasma, commonly referred to as “PRP”, is human blood that is spun down and separated producing a concentration of platelets above normal values. Platelets are the clotting cells of our blood, but they also have great potential in enhancing healing of muscle, tendon, and ligaments. Studies suggest that growth factors released by platelets recruit reparative cells, may augment tissue repair, and accelerate soft tissue healing.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection is a procedure in which we use your own blood to treat a painful condition.  A small amount of blood is drawn and then placed in a centrifuge for processing.  Much of the plasma and red blood cells are removed to obtain a high concentration of platelets which hold the growth factors used to promote healing.  We then inject your own platelet-rich plasma back into the specific area causing your pain.  Studies have shown that PRP releases a high concentration of growth factors and even stimulates stem cells which help to heal injured or degenerated tissues.

The PRP Procedure

Prior to the procedure, you will be brought into the procedure room and blood will be drawn in strict sterile fashion. This blood is then processed thought the centrifuge and the PRP is extracted.

You can request oral or IV sedation before the spinal injection portion of the procedure. Under fluoroscopic (live x-ray) guidance, a needle is placed into the disc or discs that are felt to be causing your pain. The PRP previously prepared from your own blood is then injected into the disc.  All of this is performed in our office.  Although the spinal procedure itself takes just a couple minutes, the entire process can take over an hour.
