Lumbar Pedicle Screw Fixation

Lumbar disc microsurgery is used to treat our patients with lower back pain resulting from damaged and herniated discs in their spine.

A lumbar disc microsurgery procedure removes only the affected part of the disc, and leaves the rest of the disc body intact. This allows for patients to experience relief from pain caused by the herniated disc pinching or compressing their spinal nerves. A minimally invasive approach allows for faster recovery time and a more speedy return to regular daily activity.

IS LUMBAR DISC MICROSURGERY RIGHT FOR ME?

Herniated or damaged discs in the in the lumbar part of the spine can cause numbness, tingling, weakness and pain. Those symptoms may extend from the back into the legs, because of the herniated disc pinching or compressing one or more of your spinal nerves.

Sometimes a patient’s symptoms are so severe that regular activity is limited. You should consult with your doctor if your symptoms are not relieved with conservative treatments like pain medication, stretching, or physical therapy.

In a lumbar disc microsurgery, Dr. Magued Fadly makes a tiny incision, and uses a microscope or an endoscope to view the affected area. This allows him to see where your pinched nerve is, and removes the damaged part of the disc using minimally invasive surgical instruments.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LUMBAR DISC MICROSURGERY?

At California Spine & Pain Institute, we only consider the lumbar disc microsurgery procedure if our patient’s symptoms are not relieved with other non-surgical treatments.

All surgery, no matter how minimally invasive, comes with risk. The benefit of a microsurgical procedure is that the surgery uses smaller incisions and techniques that are less invasive than a traditional open spinal surgery, which can sometimes require muscle scraping and larger incisions.

With a lumbar disc microsurgery there is minimal post-operative pain, and hospitalization time is shorter than many other procedures — in fact, we perform this kind of surgery on an outpatient basis at California Spine & Pain Institute. Recovery from a lumbar disc microsurgery is usually speedy, and results of clinical studies report high patient satisfaction scores.
