Fibromyalgia Q & A

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain and tenderness in muscles and soft tissues throughout your body. Even though the exact cause of fibromyalgia hasn’t been determined, the evidence suggests that changes in your central nervous system can make your brain and nerves hypersensitive to pain.

Pain is the primary symptom of fibromyalgia, but it’s also accompanied by other health problems. Patients typically have stiff muscles and extreme fatigue that doesn’t get better with rest. Many patients also find that they can’t focus or concentrate, a condition often referred to as fibro fog. They’re also susceptible to developing depression and anxiety.

Am I at risk for developing fibromyalgia?

If you’re a woman, you have a higher risk compared to men. There may be a genetic component, so you may be more likely to develop fibromyalgia if you have a close relative with the condition. Finally, your chances are higher if you smoke, are obese, or have rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

How is fibromyalgia treated?

The overall approach to fibromyalgia is to find ways to relieve your pain and maintain your energy. Dr. Fadly will go over medication options with you. He may also instruct you on ways to change your diet and lifestyle to optimize your health and reduce your pain.

Dr. Fadly will also discuss interventional options for fibromyalgia, including occipital nerve stimulation and lidocaine infusion. Occipital nerve stimulation uses electrodes implanted in the back of your head. As the electrodes send mild electrical impulses to sensory nerves, they can relieve pain. When lidocaine is administered intravenously, it can help suppress abnormal nerve signals, decreases nerve hypersensitivity, and help relieve pain.
